If you’re not familiar with the title of this post, then let me explain. It’s the title of a great song that was released in July 1979 by Ian Drury and The Blockheads, who were an eclectic band to say the least. The song is basically a ‘shopping-list song’. It is a simple list of a number of reasons to be cheerful and the lyrics are very observational and nostalgic. If you are familiar with the band and the song, you’ll know what exactly I mean. In fact, you are probably already singing it inside your head or whistling it, and will do for some time, as I’ve just started that ‘last record syndrome’ for you.
With a bit of my own fresh and recent trials nostalgia in mind, I thought I’d relate this famous song to my recent trials experiences, so I’ve captured them by adapting the lyrics.
Here we go! Reasons to be cheerful, part 3.
Why don’t you get back into bed?
Why don’t you get back into bed?
Why don’t you get back into bed?
Why don’t you get back into bed?
Why don’t you get back into bed?
Why don’t you get back into bed?
Why don’t you get back into bed?
Why don’t you get back into bed?
Why don’t you get back into bed?
Why don’t you get back into bed?
Reasons to be cheerful, part three 1, 2, 3
Summer, careful with the throttle, but show I’ve got bottle
Tyre pressure setting, women and men
Falling off, getting back on, falling off again
Scarborough & District Motor Club
In and out of the van and drinks at the pub
Running out of fuel, charge the battery
Prove my new trials mastery
Seeing 100% charge, peace of mind
People don’t hear me coming in a section, they don’t look behind
A bit of grin and bear it, aching body
My riding is a bit shoddy
Listen to the motor whine and look at the bodywork shine
Going through the deep water river, no electric shocks
I love lamb chops
No exhaust to warm cold hands
I’ve got one of those new electric bike brands
A little drop of chain lube and fire it over the rocks
I really, really love lamb chops

Reasons to be cheerful, one, two, three
Wensleydale cheese and pickle, a Electric Motion motorsickle
Slap and tickle
The trial results are out, something nice to study, phoning up a buddy
Being very muddy
Power-washing the bike, the boots and me
I am a trials devotee
Mastering the trials double blip
What a trip
Watching a young kid do well on a small electric bike
Maybe I should’ve bought a trike
Navigating the newly launched ACU website
Gives me and others a real fright
I forgot my helmet one day
Meant a return home to get it was underway
Another entry form completed
Another credit card payment repeated
Chatting with the community
Is always a pleasure and opportunity
Riding my Electric Motion
Is like a new emotion
Ride up through the river and the slippery rocks
I really, really, really love lamb chops
